I was curious how far down the line of succession you would have to go to find someone who would not be a catastrophically bad president. 11 positions down is the Secretary of Labor, Lori Chavez-DeRemer. She’s a Hispanic woman who was one of 6 Republican house members who signed a pledge to respect the results of the 2024 election, the only Republican cosponsor of a pro- union bill, and opposes a national Bank on abortion or IVF. Far from Ideal but light years better than the rest of the fascists on the list

It would be nigh impossible for that outcome though. If trump dies, Vance assumes the role but then selects a new VP. This new VP is now first in line and Johnson hasn’t moved up at all. It would take the synchronized deaths of all those others in line ahead of Lori Chavez-DeRemer for her to get the position. This is a known possibility so they generally keep people separated to some degree. That way if someone wants to plot a mass assassination to clear the line, it’s much more difficult. They couldn’t just try to bomb one building or something.

True, but most if not all of those positions need congressional approval of the next person holding the position. It doesn’t transfer automatically. The approval process can drag on for months. I think one or two are still “acting” secretaries under Trump.

JD Vance doesn’t have the following or the charisma to pull off the nonsense Trump does. MAGA doesn’t work without Trump. Anytime MAGA has been in an election without Trump it fails pretty spectacularly.

I want Trump to live long and quiet enough that he’s forgotten.

I want him to survive a Cat-5 hurricane that destroys Mar-a-Lago.

I want him to drool uncontrollably in a wheelchair while they take down his name down from buildings and golf resorts and turn them into shelters for the homeless and asylum seekers.

Trump is in the White House for two reasons- make himself richer and avoid prosecution for his crimes. Everything else that’s happening is being masterminded by someone else. Smart money is on Stephen Miller.

That would be the main hope, that once Trump’s “charisma” is taken out of the picture, MAGA might start to lose enthusiasm. But it would take some time for the MAGA momentum to wind down, and the authoritarians-in-waiting would be keen to consolidate power quickly and insulate themselves against the opinions of the masses. So then the next hope is that they all start fighting among themselves so hard that the damage any of them can do is limited.

I think, regardless of how, or when he dies, there will be shrines and monuments built by his supporters in much the same way as a cult. I can also see it turning out like Jamestown where his supporters drink the Kool-Aid and also I can see a Dalai Lama situation where his supporters believe his soul has inhabited The body of the new leader, thus opening the doors for a wave of new grifter and liars to control the new Trump cult.

Honestly, I think if he dies, most of his cult of personality dies with him. I bet many pull a Bush -> teabagger routine again and pretend they didn’t really like that washed-up game show host that much anyway, since he wasn’t a True Conservative ™. Remember, conservatism can never fail, it can only be failed by people improperly living up to True Conservatism ™.

So, no matter how many blatant failures of conservatism you can point to, the cons will always have an out, such as not doing it hard enough, or that they were foiled by those nasty Democrats, uppity POC, outspoken women, devious liberals, the Deep State, or whatever other bullshit you care to name.

They’ll still be cons, though, and they’ll seek the next hit of China White. They won’t settle for a Ronnie Raygun or a Bush, they’ll want to up the ante and have someone who “says what I’m thinking” - most especially if what is being verbalized are some of the darkest thoughts at the root of the Republican movement. So I’m thinking they will wait for an even bigger asshole than donnie and then pretend they never had all that donvict gear on their person, their car, their house…EXACTLY like they did for Dumbya.

I don’t disagree that regardless of a physical burial site his cult will have their ‘pilgrimage’ sites. I do want to just point out that current sentiment is not everyone in Jonestown (not Jamestown) voluntarily drank the Flavor Aid. The whole story is harrowing, even more so when you put it into the context of the time period it took place in.

If you listen to the tapes (which, totally understandable to not) - there was a woman (iirc) who argued pretty vociferously against Jim Jones plan. They had killed a U.S. congressman at that point - the idea was that they were doomed anyway. But people did argue against him.

Another aspect is that they had started the suicide drills long before they had even moved to Guyana. They had church services in California where they were told to drink what they were taught was poison.

People who didn’t drink the Flavorade were shot. You don’t need everyone to go along with it - you just need a handful of the people who are willing to take quick, immediate action.

The recent Behind the Bastards episode about Kevin Smith (not the director of Dogma but a Jamaican Pentecostal preacher) makes this pretty clear - there’s these fucked up dynamics which make certain people more willing to act, and others less so.

Yeah, I didn’t want to get too deep in the weeds, but it’s so much more complex thank ‘drink the kool-aid’. I’ve listened to the 40+ minute tape as well, and linked a well written Britannica article detailing these points as well as some important cultural impacts in my original comment.

A large portion of his ‘congregation’ were Black Americans who were beaten down by the status quo at the time. I can’t blame them for grasping at hope that his de-segregated ‘church’ valued them for the people they were. As you said there were drills for this sort of thing before, so it’s impossible to say if the ones who initially volunteered for it were truly aware of what they were doing.

I’m personally not a ‘Behind the Bastards’ person. I very much enjoy historical dark comedy; just not as a teacher. I’m more of a fan of ‘referential’ humour in that regard. If I’m trying to learn something I want it as honest and close to the source as possible.

8 years of our lives with not just no progress, but regression

Don’t forget about the increasing amounts of permanent destruction. There’s gonna be a lot of people killed, environmental damage, etc. that we can never get back even if Trump is replaced by a non-fascist and every one of his policies are immediately stopped.

The problem is that he’s always been a stupid, self-important blowhard that tells rambling, pointless stories, so his incoherence is less pronounced. Biden, for all his faults, was a great orator and debator, even around 2016 to 2018, so his drop-off in the last five years was a stark shift.

Just look at some of his speeches from the last time he was president and you’ll see the difference is night and day. Before it was just stupidity, but now it’s so much worse and he can barely form a sentence compared to then. And for all the people saying “well, Biden was clearly in decline too and everyone tried to hide it.” And you’re probably right. But you know what? He’s not the president right now. And if it was such a big deal back then it should be an even bigger deal now because we are still letting it happen.

Honestly I’m pretty sure he was already in decline back then. If you dig up old interviews with him from the 80s/90s, he was still an egomaniacal dumbfuck but he was at least somewhat articulate. If you can stomach enough of the fucker to watch all 3 in a row you can pretty much watch his brain turn to soup.

I genuinely suspect he was diagnosed with dementia around the time of that “man, person, woman, camera” incident. Usually when neuropsychological testing like that is done, they do several tests, not just one. One test that is typically given along with is the clock drawing test, which can be highly indicative of dementia. Given the everything about his personality, if he did not brag about drawing the best clock they’d ever seen…I would guess he had some pretty damn concerning results on that bit.

I feel like I notice more poor grammar from lots of people these days. Weird turns of phrase and all that. And my mind goes to COVID.

But I’m not making excuses for him. Just, noticing a pattern? Maybe it’s social media, not COVID. Who knows!

Wish all you want that Trump preferably dies soon but it doesn’t matter. He is merely the punching bag and front for the real rulers: the oligarchs. They will only prop up someone else as the fall guy, while they steal every fibre, life and soul of everything they touches.

I can’t wait for corporate fascism! Enclave when?! /s

But seriously, America wants to speedrun to corporate fascism (Thiel and Musk are accelerationists after all). But even without this speed running, corpo-fascism is only the logical conclusion of America’s deranged obsession and worshipping of capitalism.
