You’ve been here long enough to have seen the conservative shift as more Redditors come here

    This post doesn’t ring true

As if .ml would take the time off their busy schedule regurgitating Trumps/Putins right wing propaganda to kick fascist ass.

I know you’re referring to the folks referenced in the topic, but it’s best not to put that as a general statement. I’m not going to comment on politics, but there are still ways to be more inclusive and broaden perspectives. For example, a lot of women feel unwelcome here, and probably a lot of people from the disabled community, among others.

    Good, fuck 'em.

I used to lurch into conservative subreddits routinely. Each one turned into an openly fascist circlejerk and banned all dissent.

The value for conservatives in social media comes almost entirely from being able to antagonize people who don’t want to interact with them.

Once you strip away the “making the libs cry” aspect of conservative social media, they lose all interest in talking to each other. That’s why Parler failed, that’s why Trump’s blog failed, that’s why these people won’t just leave these platforms they hate so much.

And that is the underlying principle behind their hysteria toward “cancel culture” and deplatforming. They aren’t upset at losing the right to speak (nor have they lost it). They’re upset that they’re being deprived of access to a captive audience of non-conservatives to upset.

It’s not advocacy for free speech, it’s advocacy against the freedom of association.

I’m no conservative [I’m a LibSoc/Anarchist], but I can see why they wouldn’t want to be on Lemmy. It’s not the most open-minded group of people. As soon as someone thinks even slightly different in some small way, they’re labeled a fascist or some other pejorative as a way to end the discussion and critical thinking process to exclude constructively contemplating what was said. People can’t just have reasonable debates anymore. Insults are thrown and groupthink becomes more isolated and heightened within their own dogma. And their communities are brigaded regularly. It happens on their side too. The human race just seems fucked.

      I’m no conservative…

And so I brace myself for the usual rightist dog whistles…

As soon as someone thinks even slightly different in some small way, they’re labeled a fascist or some other pejorative … can’t just have reasonable debates anymore. … groupthink … dogma. … brigaded … their side …

      There it is.

If someone gets called a fascist here, it’s almost always because that person is meeting the definition of a fascist. We have a lot of different kinds of leftists here and a lot of lively and healthy debate. What you can’t get away with on Lemmy is being an awful person. If you advocate hate, oppression, authoritarianism, misinformation, injustice, etc you will be called out.

Unless you are spending time on ml or hexbear, but tankies are rightists who unironically claim they’re leftist. It’s best to avoid those places.

If you advocate hate, oppression, authoritarianism, misinformation, injustice, etc you will be called out.

That’s not even remotely true. Misinformation that fits a leftist narrative is repeated often and uncritically. Debunking and nuance gets deleted, banned, and called fascist. Antisemitism is rampant. Russia, China, any anti-western tyrant or terror group is routinely defended and advocated for.

The Overton window on Lemmy is very narrow. People get banned from big news and politics subs for stating views that are mainstream in the American Democratic Party or European Social democratic parties.

It sounds like you might be encountering ml or hexbear, which are full of tankies, who are rightists appropriating leftist terminology for authoritarian/rightist purposes. The nice thing about lemmy is that it’s federated, so certain instances and communities can be avoided if desired.

I think there’s furious and constant discussion between the various left leaning and far left groups on Lemmy, but “”“brigading”“” isn’t real. That’s just using the website.
