I was making light of your question … partly to have a bit of fun … and partly to show that the community enjoys sharing these silly little bits of movie quotes that act like memes. The one I was using is from the movie “The Naked Gun” (the original film from 1988 with Leslie Nielson)

A lot of the meme communities enjoy old slapstick movie content as there is a lot of memeable content there … films like ‘The Naked Gun’ series, Hot Shots, any of the Mel Brooks films and Monty Python.

Don’t be afraid to test your boundaries, comment as you like but with an open mind and kind heart … people will let you know if you’ve said or implied anything negative or positive. Don’t be discouraged if you get no response either … it’s not a popularity contest. The longer you stay, the more you comment, the more you get to know people and the more they get to know you and eventually you become a regular part of the community.

Welcome to Lemmy and welcome to the fediverse.

Please do not drag the same tired jokes over from reddit (e.g. broken arms). Stick around long enough to learn Lemmy’s tired jokes.

Each Lemmy instance has its own rules, and each community as well. Please read them before posting, because rule #3 for this community is:

    1. Not regarding using or support for Lemmy: context, see the list of support communities and tools for finding communities below

I switched from reddit awhile back. It is similar, but so far have seen a lot less hostility than reddit. I don’t have time for those types , so if they turn to insults rather than proper dialog I just block them, even if they weren’t talking to me directly. It makes it a much more pleasant experience

By ratio, there are way more communists than on Reddit. There are three major groups, anarchists, Marxist-Leninists, and liberals, and each instance tends to have more of one or maybe 2 than the others. Getting a feel for instance culture goes a long way.

A major difference I noticed with Lemmy from my time on Reddit is communities aren’t quite as rabid about strict adherence to their topic or gimmick. r/whatisthisthing banned me for seven days once for elaborating what an E6B flight computer is for. Because “This community is for IDENTIFYING the thing, not DISCUSSING the thing!” Not…so much of that around here.

It’s the same shit, lemmy has it’s own flavour of power hungry unhinged mods (see yepowertrippingbastards /c/[email protected] ). And due to multiple instances some of the vocal users are affected by tribalism (as in “my instance is better, your instance is xyz”).

I’m a .ml because it was the second most popular instance when I joined, and I refuse to be bullied by other people tribalism to change to a different instance.

(Although that /s… if you tried to joke with me, then I’m sorry, I was/am too tired to understand it)

Honestly I’ve found the effects are more personal. I like interacting with the sh mods more; they’re a good combo of decent morals but also playful irreverence. They don’t get on me for honest jokes, but they’re also very willing to be like nah buddy it’s time to log off for a few days when they need to. (Hubs prefers the Twitter format if anybody knows a masto instance with similar vibes)

It’s pretty much the same but on Reddit it’s ok to be combative and rude with people as long as public opinion approves. Also most of the posts are bots so you aren’t actually being rude to a person there most times.

Please don’t do that here. There are way less bots here so please remember you are speaking to actual humans.

Also political discourse is mostly ok here. Same rules apply with rudeness though. On Reddit you will get quarantined or shadow banned quickly with anything politically charged.

My best advice is that if it seems inactive, that means you should subscribe to a bunch of stuff and switch to hot, top 6 hour and scaled. Active is the default and seems the least active.

The comments in this thread will give you a great idea on how most people act around here. Hate the idea and not the user and you should be fine.

Your “also plz be kind :D” comment tells me that you’re going to go through a bit of withdrawal on the hate and drama. It’s great here even even though we have a few trolls and bots.

Reddit keeps everyone engaged with hate and drama. They have bots that go after people to troll. Of course, there are the real trolls as well. So far, we’re a little lighter than that.

How are you liking it here?

Post frequently. Comment frequently. Make some friends/acquaintances. Try to remember that the folks making posts and comments are generally human (more so than on reddit). Try to be kind. Don’t pay too much mind to inter-instance drama unless it’s in a light-hearted and fun way (it’s simply not worth it otherwise), or has a real impact on your experience (in which case use the blocking tools). If someone named Nicole PMs you ignore it and maybe let your instance’s admin team know.

I’ve been here for two years now. It’s generally a great group and I’m happy I joined the API-ocolypse migration from reddit. Welcome! :)

Oh man, I think there’s a community about our friend Nicole, I’ll see if I can find it.

Long story short, many of us got PMs from someone named Nicole, but were invited to call her the fediverse chick. She was supposedly an international student at a Canadian university, and wanted to connect with people at some link I personally never clicked on (iirc it was to some other fediverse service).

Nicole seemed very determined - many accounts, across many instances, with many, many messages sent. ‘Nicole spam’ is now a known term for many instance admins.

First thing, Lemmy is in need of content and likes recruiting. Hence you got 315 replies, heh.

Basically, if you aren’t a bigot, you don’t have to worry about what you say. You can be politically incorrect in any direction and not get a global/shadowban from the Fediverse.

Each instance has its own flavor and etiquette.
