The president’s Oval Office meeting with New York’s incoming leader is not open to the press.

Trump, 79, frequently invites reporters into the Oval Office for a front-seat view as he sits down with U.S. and world leaders, but, according to his schedule, the media was barred from his first meeting with Mamdani, the Democratic socialist 45 years his junior.

Their first face-to-face comes after Trump lobbed a series of nasty attacks on the political upstart who mounted an underdog campaign and went on to win the race to lead the largest city in the U.S.

Trump has blasted Mamdani as a “communist lunatic” and “not very smart.” He falsely accused him of being in the country illegally, threatened to arrest him, and warned that he would cut off money to New York if he won.

I don’t like it, with press present harder for Trump to bull some bullshit. Behind closed doors anything can happen. They could claim he tried to attack trump why he had to be killed. For fucksakes they called him a terrorist. No way he should be meeting the president in private.

I’m not into consperacy but you’re right. On the other hand … Trump is stupid enough to have him killed any day of the week

Honestly, I think this is the best option. Nothing good would have come of their conversation being in public.

He keeps trying to pass himself off as a smart man, and there’s just no way to keep up that act if you’ve got an actually smart man talking to you.

100%, the American public, for as much as everyone complains about the state of politics, are not much better as a driving force for policy and good outcomes.

Because everyone can’t keep their shit together and the most ill-informed voices now speak loudest, we’re going to see more and more actual politics moving behind closed doors, for better or worse.

I think that’s fine, though. You don’t always need to see how the sausage is made. It’s only the fact they Trump is such an untrustworthy person that this is an issue. I trust Mamdani, though.

I disagree. I think Mamdani would have made a fool out of Trump while trying not to. He still will, but now we won’t get to see it.

You want entertainment. He wants to take the job seriously. The mayor of New York wants to secure some form of business dealing going forward and do right by his constituency.

When his hands are tied behind public image, he can’t talk openly about a lot of things that would make the general public panic or not understand the meaning and context. We tend to forget or choose to forget that even the best politics is still public perception management.

What good would have come from that? Trump would just go overboard with whatever fascist retaliation he can in order to compensate for his embarrassment.

Nah, trump couldn’t even open his mouth without pissing off his base. Any footage would call attention to his base that he let the “devil” in.

The press secretary said the meeting speaks to the fact that Trump is willing to meet with anyone to do what’s right on behalf of the American people, but she didn’t let it go without attempting a dig at the mayor-elect and Democratic Party.

“I will just add, it speaks volumes that tomorrow we have a communist coming to the White House because that’s who the Democrat Party elected mayor of the largest city in the country,” she said

    It really does…

Just not in the way she thinks it does.

      press secretary

      Democrat Party

This is the fucking press secretary talking like a child. It’s like hearing an adult that still mispronounces words and says things like “supposably” instead of supposedly. They also think it’s some big own, but collectively, they all look like children and I want to see the press grow a spine and ask them why they do this. I mean, Donvict is calling them “piggy” and other insults anyway, they might as well ask about this as well.

Start shaming these motherfuckers, even over what is something others might call “trivial” - this is an orchestrated thing and has been for decades.

Imagine if every single Democratic politician, every single talking head, everywhere were to sync up on a misnomer for the Republican Party and start using that. It is not like it would not pass without comment, but for some reason, all these assholes, from the very top, always and constantly walk around saying “Democrat Party” with a shit-eating grin on their face. They know what they are doing, and NOT commenting on it is not doing anyone any favors.

I absolutely share the thoughts and agree with the sentiment. However, technically, “supposably” is a real part of the English language that has uses. But yes they villainize the entire Democrat base, and they use it as fuel. I wish there were more GOP town halls to watch constituents clown on their representatives, but they’re too scared.

Any Democrat or progressive worth a damn shouldn’t meet with him on camera. He’d rather have sound bytes than actual productive conversation.

On the flip side, folks have repeatedly shown Trump to be susceptible to being manipulated. Famously flipping back and forth on issues based on who had the most recent pleasant conversation with him.

It’s distasteful, but an opportunity that shouldn’t be skipped. Otherwise only the worst people get their turn at manipulating him.

I am very cynical. I don’t think there will be productive conversation happening in private either. I’d be more inclined to think threats and intimidation will be the brunt of it. The orange turd thinks he’s a mobster, but does have the backing of Russia and Israel.

I think you do, but fine, I accept the correction. In my mind I have capable and real (even movie) mobsters and with him, he thinks he’s that, but he’s a dollar store idiot mobster. Deffo not the brains of anything. I suppose that’s my reasoning. What was the saying?

“…he is a weak man’s idea of a strong man, a poor man’s idea of a rich man, and a stupid man’s idea of a smart man.”

I’ve known a couple of mob people. They’re just people with low moral ethics. They extort, blackmail and bribe for their own benefit. They usually have the smart people work for them. Trump is smart about putting a fake gold leaf over everything where people don’t look too closely at how he’s an actual mob guy. He did business with the russian mob ffs.

I hope he plays it smart behind closed doors. Stroke his ego in person, get him to agree to a public debate, then destroy him with facts using the most basic logic that even his voters can understand.
