Summary

At least a dozen House Republicans are considering backing Rep. Don Bacon’s (R-Neb.) bill to limit presidential power over tariffs, directly challenging Trump, who has threatened a veto.

The bill would require congressional approval for tariffs to last beyond 40 days and allow Congress to repeal them anytime.

Senators from both parties support a companion bill.

Some GOP lawmakers cite harm to farmers and constitutional oversight duties as reasons to support the measure, though others hesitate due to Trump’s influence and veto warning.

“We’re thinking about maybe, possibly, some time in the near future, growing a spine… Maybe… If ya know, he does what he says he’s gonna do, then, yeah, we’ll probably have to do something about that. Maybe…”

Great. I’m happy, really, that some cracks however small are appearing. But unless I’m mistaken, even if the House and Senate bills could get smushed together and passed by both houses, it would need Trump’s signature to become law - something he is most assuredly not going to do. Is there enough votes to override his veto?

I mean, that veto is subject to an override like any other.

What baffles me is that things that were done through Congress is being undone unilaterally by the executive, and Republicans’ responses are basically “oh yes, this is fine. Would you like some more of our power, Mr. President? We aren’t using it, help yourself!”

Oh wow a whole dozen? I mean thats really showing him who is boss.

Whats that? He can veto the bill and neither the house or senate has veto proof margins on these?

So fuck off with this attempt to seem like a not piece of shit. This is what you wanted

This is theater. First and foremost, even if they could pass the bill through both houses, he would NEVER sign it, and they’d never have the votes for an over-ride. So the concept is already dead in the water.

Secondly, 40 days of tariffs like these would still do incredible economic damage, and still crash the global economy. All he would have to do is run the tariffs for 39 days, and then renew them with a slight change for another 39 days.

So its all a useless ploy to give Republicans the opportunity to say “See we did everything to oppose him as well, but he’s such a genius that he outsmarted us at every turn.”
