“On June 27, 2023, she entered the country on a visa that would allow her to remain in the country until June 13, 2024,” the statement read. “In violation of our nation’s laws, she overstayed her visa. She will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.”

ABC News reported that it obtained documents showing Ameaka had a work authorization permit until 2029 and had a pending asylum case. Earlier this week, Ameaka’s colleagues said they were “extremely distressed” by the esteemed researcher’s ICE arrest.

This time, the school didn’t even need to respond - ABC was able to obtain the documentation that - in all likelihood - ICE conveniently dismissed due to… reasons.

Even earning a Teacher of the Year award, in addition to a valid work visa, fails to protect a person of color:

Yup. ICE will look at a legally binding document and say that it’s fake and there’s nothing you can do about it. Happened to my coworker who was held in one of their concentration camps for five months.

ICE is doing this now. They get information from TSA on who is going to be at what airports, and at which dates and times. That lets ICE make their arrest quotas with relatively low effort on their end.

If you have any kind of not completely regular immigration status, I would urge you to avoid domestic air travel in the United States right now.

People have been arrested at airports for overstayed visas, when they filed an adjustment of status on time, and the application has just been sitting at USCIS for several years.

Good point. I’m just wondering if you considered the fact that she’s black and therefore bad?

USA as a country is disgusting, and I am disgusted the American people chose this, and let the insanity that is USA now continue.
USA is becomming what they used to fight, and is no better than Nazi Germany.
Boycott USA in whatever way you can.
