“I just haven’t knocked on anyone’s door in New York City and they’ve said their concern is that the mayor makes too little,” Mamdani said.

Why is this guy so great???

He is exactly what this country needs right now. We need more progressives to follow in his steps. Maybe one state at a time we can make this place NOT a shithole anymore.

They’re not entirely off the mark though. Native-born Americans are pretty spoiled and complacent, on average. Immigrants, even kids, tend to have more of a sense of context and a sort of hustle mentality. My wife’s an immigrant and we’ve talked at length about it.

You’re right that he’s as American as any other citizen in ways that matter, but born-and-raised Americans are more likely to get swept up in our bread and circuses.

On WABC (AM 770 in my area) they literally tried to put a negative spin on this! Apparently, since he’s already a millionaire, he doesn’t need it! Evil guy! They even played the clip of him talking about going door to door and no one told him they’re concerned the mayor doesn’t make enough. Beyond fucking delusional. I turn that shit on when I’m looking for maximum and immediate cognitive dissonance.

To be clear, these raises aren’t a bad thing. Mamdani just recognizes he as an individual doesn’t need one.

If Mamdani signs the bill, it would mark the first City Council raise since 2016.

The pay raises were recommended by a commission appointed by Mamdani earlier this year.

Donald Trump has done similar things. It’s just something populists do, doesn’t really indicate anything about the person other than then being a populist.

People too lazy to discuss actual policies will always point to these kinds of actions as proof that their guy is a good person. That’s why populists do these things. Because populists think their base is dumb and will eat this shit up. And they’re often right.

Donald Trump has done similar things.

Like shilling for Goya products from the Oval Office? Yes that’s totally similar to turning down a raise.

No, like turning down a pay check:

            https://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyphillipserb/2016/11/14/trump-says-no-to-presidential-salary-could-you-do-the-same-cut-your-tax-bill/

Like I say, the people that support him point to things like this and ignore all of the many many criticisms of him. He probably took the money anyway, a populist only needs to say they’re turning down money, it gets some headlines that supporters will link to those and it doesn’t matter if it actually happens.

This is just how populism works. You’re upset when your guy gets called out for bullshit populism while at the same time thinking some other guy is being bullshit when they do bullshit populism. Even when it’s the same action. Populism is all about increasing the popularity of the person, while ignoring policies. It’s just “my guy good, other guy bad.”

I have no problem with him getting a raise, he deserves it. Could have made a whole lot more money being corrupt
