According to the United States Code, which has a special section for commemorative coins: “No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President.”

It’s clearly illegal and they can’t issue it. This is Bessent’s attempt at trying to suck Trump.

Well, you know, Bessent could be calling for Trump’s death, in order to be able to legally put his face on coins in two years during what would be Vance’s acting term.

Um Ackshually, if Vance becomes President because Trump bites the big one (or resigns), then Vance becomes the actual, not acting, 48th President, for reals.

It’s only if Vance becomes President due to the 25th Amendment that he gets to be “acting President”.

            Vice presidents are technically elected.

They originally were directly elected as presidents by the electoral college (which is a completely different problem we need to address), whoever was the runner up, became vice president. However, after the 12th amendment they are elected as vice president by the electoral college.

I think it would be interesting to allow voting for the vp separately on the ballot, but only if it’s popular vote, which should be happening for President as well.

It’s only illegal if Trump is alive when they do it. Maybe they know something we don’t?

Even the Nazis never put Hitler on a coin, and they were in power issuing ‘reichsmarks’ with swastikas on them for ~13 years, supposedly Hitler said he should not appear on coins until they had won the war.

So this is real ‘glorious leader’ energy akin to North Korea.

“With some luck, should be able to start circulation in two years”

Can there be a clearer sign of the degeneration of the “full faith and credit” of the United States than embossing the currency with the likeness of a man who is famous for stiffing creditors and contractors for his entire career?

In the Untied States, isn’t the rule that you have to die before your face is on coins? So, is this a death threat against Trump?

Well if trump dies within the next year then he can get all the commemorative coins and statues and memorials that he so badly wants. He just can’t visit them, physically…

Great! Just put him on a regular-issue coin. Problem solved!

I’m sure they’ll be cheaply made so I could drill a hole in them and use them as washers. At least they’ll be useful then.

OMG! Does Treasury Secretary Bessent know something is going happening to the president to allow the law, as it stands today, legally to put trump on a coin?! Shouldn’t the Secret Service be talking to Bessent?

any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President

we’re still in time for a trump coin in 2027, though, and in this way it wouldn’t need to have an engraving of a failed assassination on the back
