“Far-right pastor Doug Wilson set off a firestorm by saying that Catholic parades ought to be banned in a Christian-controlled nation.”
That’s because “maga” is a baby-word that is a stand-in for the conservatives as they have always been. None of this shit is really new - the KKK has been staunchly anti-Catholic since forever.
They just aren’t wearing hoods now. They seized power and a lot of them now have the permission structure to not only say this kind of thing behind closed doors (as they always have, by the way, I assure you).
Right, but a lot of Catholics voted MAGA last time around, solely on the basis of abortion policy. Not realizing that Catholics have always been on The List. Maybe after pregnant women, immigrants, and trans folks. But eventually, MAGA is coming for them too.
A lot of blacks and Hispanics and LGBTQ voted for “maga” too, not realizing (or forgetting, or engaging in a lot of self-delusion) they are also on The List.
A lot of people voted for their own oppression, not believing that it would ever come around to them. It takes a lot of willful ignorance of history to get to where we are.
Also, we seem to burying the lede here a bit.
For one thing this asshole thinks that married women should not be able to vote. Also, he’s talking about a “xtian nation”:
Wilson’s comments add fuel to that fire. As Right Wing Watch reported, the pastor said recently that in his ideal Christian nation, “public displays of idolatry” would be banned, including Catholic parades.
GTFO with that shit.
If he wants a xtian nation, he can fuck off to somewhere else that actually is. That’s not here. Xtians have been dwindling for some time and now are around 62%, and, more importantly, even if they were at 99%, this country was founded as a secular nation based on Enlightenment principles.
It’s too bad our schools are failing to drill that into their thick skulls. No one in this country is required to be part of their little book club or its rules.
US of A is gonna US of A.
At one point, one of the largest chapters of the KKK was the anti-French anti-Catholic chapter in Maine.
