I remember most of the 90s being filled with lots and lots of spittle-flecked rants from the right wing about how Bill Clinton was “disrespecting” the military. They also had a related conspiracy theory they kept propagating about how the military purposefully gave some cue right in front of him (dealing with salutes ) that they disrespected him, too.
I’m just imagining what that crowd would have done if Clinton wore a hat to something like this. I’m thinking they just might have given themselves aneurysms over it.

if they’re going to flip out over a tan suit, which literally means “it’s summer”, we’re going to point out a hat, which means disrespect to the dead.
