It’s been like that for awhile. It’s funny the internet was supposed to be decentralized but it’s controlled by what 5 companies now.
That’s now. You’re describing right now.
Snowden warned everyone in 2013.
Sneakernet, people. Sneakernet.
Everything else about the internet is enshitifying, yes, we should fight it. But we’ll still be able to share 'wares either way.
Or networking. Site to site tunnels to friends and family, share.
Oh they’ll come for computers too. The coming war on general purpose computing Cory calls it.
“They” have been largely successful. They didn’t 1984 the general purpose computer, they brave-new-world’ed it. The vast, vast majority of people online were convinced to use “mobile devices” for everything, and they seem to fall under different expectations than a computer (even though they technically are). Like how Cory points out that “sideloading” is even a word. And then when they actually do use a computer, it’s a work computer locked down by IT.
People are extremely lazy. They’ll trade away everything if it lets them avoid learning anything. Mobile devices aren’t the end of the story here. With LLMs they are trading away their public education, their entire future, just to avoid doing homework.
And how do we get these wares?
In the old days, you could come by my house with your big box of floppies. Nowadays, I’d imagine it’s easy to carry a microsd card in your wallet.
Fucking infuriating for all the people who said 30 years ago letting Clinton off for lying under oath would snowball…
An absolute shit ton of people saw this coming for decades.
If you refuse to hold “your team” accountable, it just means the most corrupt people possible will represent your team.
I saw it coming forever ago, always been astonished governments didn’t move faster to impose controls.
But what does Clinton have to do with it? Lying about a blowjob, even under oath to Congress, is pretty thin sauce for impeachment. If fact, impeachment would have set a dangerous precedent for future Presidents. If that tiny lie would be the standard, every President would be impeached by the opposing party, every time.
Where we fucked up was not impeaching Trump the first two times around. Now it’s impossible.
It wasn’t about the bj, it wouldn’t have been about 1,000
It was about the president lying under oath.
It was normalized from them on out, and you might think it was forever ago, but there have been two Republican presidents since: Lil Bush, and trump.
And they told big lies that caused a shit ton of death and destruction.
Dems haven’t done too much better. Obama lied out his ass and everyone fell for it, and Biden was so out of it his entire admin and mainstream media had to lie for him.
On along enough timeline, it’s clear cause and effect.
The president stopped being held to their word, and shit went downhill fast
I mean there is a shit ton to blame Clinton for. His reagan-like administration helped to destroy a lot of the guardrails that we could have been using today. Is deregulation campaigns were devastating to the American system. Truly one of the worst Presidents in our history.
However while I think he’s a piece of shit for lying under oath it is beyond naive to think Republicans needed an excuse for their lawlessness. These are people that already resented the idea that Nixon had to pay any price for his crimes. These are people that colluded with Iran to win an election. Then they committed high treason in the Iran Contra affair. Then one of the participants of that affair pardoned everyone involved with it. If you think for one second they needed Bill Clinton’s endorsement of lying under oath to justify their behavior you are nuts. They were well well past that.
