  • It’s cool that you were invited. Also ironic that you chose to make the “politics” community here all about USA and now level accusations of gatekeepering?

Maybe it doesn’t feel like a big deal to you, but I think it’s reasonable for Canadians to feel concerned that foreign content/news tends to overshadow our own, especially given how the USGov is treating foreign relations these days.

American corps already run a lot of news outlets here, dominate the entertainment industry, and have no qualms about throwing their weight around. Lemmy was looking like a place for other countries such a Canada to maybe have a bit of space for our own news and content while still being connected to the world, but it didn’t take long for feeds to be overwhelmed here too.

A little room to breathe or at least maybe some consideration of where this community “lives” doesn’t feel like a lot to ask. If you consider that a “diatribe” and want to toss your weight around that’s not much I can do to stop you, but it also kinda proves my point.

  • Correction, Canadian instance.

    sh.itjust.works is Canadian.

So I guess a better question might be: why did you join a Canadian instance to create a generically named community about American politics?

Did you think “gee, sh.itjustworks is a funny name, I’m going to sign up there”, was it more a land-grab for a high-level keyword “politics” as a community, instead of creating it as “uspolitics” or “americanpolitics”. Or maybe you just assumed American politics were the one that mattered most, even on a non-American instance?

Whatever your reasoning, now Canadians who signed up for this Canadian instance see your American news in their feed under the “politics” heading. It’s not even “American politics relevant to Canadians”

    Not really a great look.

  • “senior” is a pretty wide range though. You can be old enough to get a senior’s discount and still able enough to do most things. Maybe you aren’t going to be doing 100 situps after jogging 10 miles, but march the streets and hold a rifle sure, and there’s probably a good mix of ex-military in there as well as people who know how to make stuff go kaboom in unique and interesting ways.

Taking away their reasons to sit contently and die quietly might not work out as well as some think, but this party in particular is pretty good at thinking everyone but themselves are inept.

  • Yeah, even just kicking out these crazies isn’t a good fix because they’ve already demonstrated they’re more than willing to lie, cheat, and steal to hold on to or gain power.

The only justice I’d trust would need to come at the end of a rope, and it’d need to include a LOT of colluders at the very least in cells as well. That includes certain media organizations that helped enable this shit-show as well.

After all that, the American public needs to force better, including proper regulation and enforcement of public over corporate interests. While some of it has been astroturfing, the embedded cleptocracy and corporate interest in the Democratic party also needs to be fixed (or both parties turfed and new better choices), because “lesser evil” is not good enough.

Other countries should also take heed from the US situation. This is what happens when you continually tolerate the intolerable, and when your government is owned by a billionaire+ untouchable aristocracy with a corporate shield protecting them from consequences.
