A woman candidate is a non starter.

This. This right here. This is what people are going to have to start accepting.

We heard throughout the entire campaign “Biden too old!”. And to be fair, he was. That debate performance proved it. But here’s the thing. Once his replacement was announced, people suddenly stopped having a problem with age, because they ran right back to Bernie Sanders. Suddenly, age wasn’t nearly as much of an issue any more. The voters ultimately stood up in one voice and said “We’d still vote for a really old man or at least let another old man with dementia return to power before we vote for a black woman”. It’s like the voters demanded someone younger, saw the DNC endorse Harris, and said “No, not like that!”

The Gaza excuse doesn’t make sense either, because Trump was actively campaigning on glassing the place and turning it into beachfront property. Never mind the fact that Harris was in a lose-lose position with regards to the war (Had she turned and supported Gaza, she’d have lost significantly more Jewish voters and the race would have been an even bigger Trump victory), but even if you believe she’s “supporting a genocide”, the fact of the matter is that Trump’s position was not only to support it, but to speed it up. You can’t claim that you didn’t vote for Harris over Gaza while allowing someone who you damn well know is going to be even worse for Gaza to rise back to power. Again, this doesn’t make the last bit of logical sense. Another excuse for people who just couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a black woman and needed an excuse to either convince themselves or their social circle to justify it.

What else was there? “Well, she wasn’t clear on some of her economic policies”. Literal quote from news reporters on the Harris/Trump debate where Trump’s answer to an economic policy question was “They’re eating the dogs! They’re eating the cats! They’re eating…the pets!”.

Or “They’re all just handpicked by the corporate elite”. Or “we’re trying to send a message to the Democrat party to put forward better candidates”. Or my personal favorite “She campaigned with Liz Cheney that one time…”.

Or whatever other excuse people keep coming up with. Not a single one of them has ever been able to answer the question of “Even if you believe that, how does allowing Trump return to power make it any better or advance your position?”

The fact of the matter is that Democrats have their own share of low-key racists and bigots. They’re just not as open about it as Republicans, and still prefer to hide behind whatever convenient excuse they can come up with. But they’ve twice over proven that, for all their bluster about age and progressive values, they’ll gladly allow an old white man with dementia to return to power before they ever consider voting for a woman. I’ll echo the exact same thing you said. I don’t like it, and you don’t have to agree with it. But reality is what reality is. If the Democrat party puts forward a woman or minority in 2028, especially after 4 years of Trump stoking racial tensions, they’re going to lose. Full stop. This country is not willing to accept a woman President. Heck, I’m willing to bet that Obama was a fluke and the voters won’t vote in a minority as President again, at least not in my lifetime.

  • Why is it that every time we get rid of the Joe Manchins of the party, someone else insists on taking on his role and torpedoing whatever Democrats manage to try to accomplish? There’s always one. Sometimes two.

It’s not pro wrestling. We don’t need someone “turning heel” at the last minute and “Swerving the voters” to keep things entertaining. We don’t need character twists like it’s some kind of HBO drama. But yet every time one of these Manchin morons goes, it’s like Democrats say “Ladies and gentlemen, the role of ‘Shitstain Democrat here to gum up the works’ will now be played by…”

  • Sure. Just let me know exactly what your plan is.

We could hold protests…until Trump sends in the National Guard and has anyone that looks vaguely brown or uppity arrested.

We could petition our elected representatives, who either are not in power or have willingly ceded power to Trump. I’m sure that’ll help.

Maybe we could get reliable information from the news, if they weren’t already curtailing coverage that’s critical of Trump or anything Trump doesn’t like out of fear of political retribution or retaliatory political action.

We could sue through the court system, which was just stripped of virtually any ability to do anything about Trump.

I mean obviously, we need to get involved in our next election. Which is only 18 months away. Surely nothing catastrophic could happen in such a short period of time, right? Can’t wait to elect deep-blue representatives in my already deep-blue state. I’m sure that’ll accomplish a lot. That’s assuming elections even take place.

And hey, there’s always getting involved locally. Organize a resistance. Go ahead. I’m sure you’re more than willing to be the first to stick your neck out there. And I’m sure there’s no chance that your group is infiltrated long before it gets to anything resembling a critical mass or manages to accomplish anything noteworthy.

You don’t get it, do you?

Trump won. He has full control now. The Supreme Court has now said that not only is Trump legally immune from prosecution, judges don’t even have the right to stop him. Congress has willingly ceded their authority and he’s already using the national guard to quell anything he deems a “protest”. Our educational institutions have bent the knee, businesses are adopting Trump-friendly policies, and the press has severely curtailed criticism of Trump out of fear of retribution.

The only path forward is violence. And even that is a long shot as Trump has control of law enforcement who are chomping at the bit waiting for the opportunity to go full Call-of-Duty on as many brown people as they can. All other pathways have been closed. You wanna be the one sticking your neck out? Go right ahead. Let me know how the weather is in El Salvador. Or South Sudan. Or whatever 3rd world shithole you find yourself taking an involuntary vacation in. But not all of us think that this is a movie where we’re just waiting for John Connor to rise from the ashes and lead us to victory.

  • So is this a 12 hour ceasefire? 24? Permanent (read: until the next time)?

And why does it start in 6 hours? Do the two sides get to just lob missiles at each other for the next 6 hours and then just say “gg” in a text to each other or something?

Whether Trump had anything to do with any agreed upon deal should also be taken with several grains of salt. Remember, he likes to take credit for things he had nothing to do with such as the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. This assumes there is even a tentative ceasefire in place, which itself I question given the source.

Or Iran could just be playing Trump for a fool. Let Trump think that he won because he’s the bestest thing ever, and then while he’s taking a victory lap, lob some bombs at Tel Aviv and make Trump look like a complete moron in the process.

  • What frustrates me is how we, especially on the left, tend to fumble these moments. Instead of recognizing that some of these people might be waking up, we rush to humiliate them. We waste the opportunity to build something better just so we can rub their faces in it and get our own little high.

I’ll give a prime example of this: Liz Cheney.

Now don’t get me wrong. I disagree with 99.9% of her policy decisions. And yes, she helped create the beast. But we keep asking when Republicans are going to finally say “I’ve had enough of this.” and stand up to Trump. And she did. Again, say what you will about her policies but in the end, she literally put her career on the line and got excommunicated from her own party in order to expose Trump and attempt to hold him accountable.

And we responded to the courage it must have taken her to be the first prominent member of her party to break ranks with Trump by ostracizing her too. “HAHAHA now teh leopardz r eating ur face”. We laughed as she was basically run out of politics at warp speed. Rather than at least try to work with her and use her to build a bipartisan coalition against Trump, we decided to get a few kicks of our own in while she was down. And then we wonder why nobody else from the party has followed in her footsteps.

I’m not saying we should have thrown her a ticker-tape parade or anything like that. But we keep asking what it’s going to take for Republicans to break ranks and cross the aisle to stand up to Trump. How can we expect them to do that when that is how they’re going to be treated? If the best Democrats have to offer them is to make fun of them and kick them while they’re down, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they stick to the abusive relationship they’re already in. And I’m not saying that we needed to vote her back into office. But there was an opportunity to use the influence she had to at least try to build a bipartisan coalition against Trump and we squandered it because we have also allowed politics to get so tribal that anyone on the other side is always wrong no matter what and is always the enemy forever and ever and ever amen instead of ever admitting that they may actually have a point once in a while.
