I really want this to move the needle, please!

I don’t generally think “we already know” is a useful response to a news story. Just because you already know doesn’t mean there isn’t a wide audience who is being exposed to information for the first time.
Specifically for Kirk, I remember mentioning him to my wife a week beforehand and she didn’t know who he was.
Now that he’s dead, MAGA people are trying to make him into a martyr who was such a great guy. It’s helpful to have countering voices saying loudly, no he was not.
I get that things are concerning and stressful right now, but read the thing and think about it - they have to actually commit a criminal act to get arrested. He’s trying to head them off from doing it before it happens. The governor of California didn’t say something like this, but the governor of Illinois is saying it.
They have to commit the crimes before you can arrest them. He’s saying if you do get deployed in Chicago don’t fuck around or we’ll hold you accountable. Yeah, have to actually see follow through, but this is more of a warning shot
I bought a size of pizza from a food truck in DC and it was so bad I threw it away. Which is saying a lot for pizza
Lot of people here need to get informed and get a grip. Just because a bill is introduced doesn’t mean it will be passed. The overwhelming majority of bills that are introduced don’t pass. And this is in one state, not federal. And if the legislature passed it the governor may veto it, and it would certainly face legal challenge.
I get that everything sucks right now and it feels like we’re getting attacked on every front. I get the administration is doing illegal stuff. We’re in for a rough time. Still: don’t give them power by acting like every idea they bring up is likely, or possible. This bill is just trolling, it’s so some nobody state level legislators will have a bullet point in their newsletter and a social media post.
I had waited a long time to have any kind of personal experience of God, and finally gave up. Like they said, the holy spirit was supposed to work in you, I prayed for it and looked for it for a long time. Since it didn’t appear, no reason to excuse the problematic passages or shitty people.
If you know it then why are you being a dick?
You know in most elections slightly less than half of the voters voted for the other candidate, right?
Didn’t things look worse when Nazi Germany was at its height? Didn’t things look worse when slavery was at its height?
The state of the world has been much worse before, and things still got better.
We have to acknowledge that a lot of people died, and a lot more were hurt, before things got better. And it may come to that in our times as well. But barring nuclear disaster, things can improve. And one prerequisite is not agreeing to lay down and die.
Like I said, I get it. Seems like anyone with any real power doesn’t recognize the severity of the situation. Seems like there’s no justice. Are you going to say “no point in trying”? I don’t think so because you wouldn’t be so mad about it if you didn’t care. I don’t have the answer. But believing change is possible is a crucial ingredient in change happening.
I get it, he’s doing all kinds of shit that’s illegal now. And I get it, people need to stand up to him.
At the same time, let’s not do his work for him by treating it like a forgone conclusion he will do whatever he wants.
Sometimes politicians, law enforcement and just rank & file workers need assurance and official blessing to not comply.
I don’t like how things are going at all, and want to be clear eyed about the situation. Still, lets not assume it’s all over, cause it’s not.
In the faq section it asks who the leadership is and they say they’re decentralized. It asks who they’re partnered with and says “if you’re interested in partnering reach out”. It asks what are your demands and essentially says “we’ll figure out specifics once we have more people onboard”.
This website presents itself as a movement, but I would guess is the work of one person or a handful of people, who don’t have experience in this area.
Which isn’t to say people have to have experience to get involved. And it isn’t to say we don’t have a bunch of valid reasons to be mad and ready to take action. Just that from a strategic standpoint, if you’re asking people to put their livelihoods at risk you need to be able to earn their trust, and you need a clear explanation of what benefit participants can expect to get.
One advantage as I understand it between a worker cooperative and an ESOP is that the worker cooperative has a one person one vote system. It avoids the issue you mention about not having voting shares. I worked at a place with an ESOP and just the managers had shares. And even there they didn’t prevent the business being sold to private equity. Sure they got paid out but now that previously family owned business is part of a monopoly in our industry.
Lame duck representatives still have the power and duty to vote on legislation!
The important part is that she’s still officially a member of Congress. People voted for her to represent their interests. If she’s no longer able to fulfill that duty she should have stepped down and let someone else do it. As it stands she and her staff are still collecting salaries paid by the American people. It’s also if interest because of the general tend of geritocracy - our elected officials are really old, and it calls into question the decisions they’re making and their ability to lead.
I started to read the pdf but stopped. Just a little bit in and it struck me as complicated, and that’s as someone familiar with ranked choice voting, proportional voting, etc. Not that complexity is inherently bad, but when it comes to group decision making, elegant solutions will encourage many people to participate. Complicated solutions will favor people with lots of time or money.
I also don’t think weighing systems so that certain people have more of a say than others is ideal. It’s true that experts know more than lay people. But there are challenges in identifying and labeling experts, deciding what being an expert in a given subject should mean in terms of more power/influence, and in doing so creating mechanisms for gaming the system.
Interesting idea. Sometimes it’s easier to act and come up with something first, then ask other people to join later.
