The U.S. Senate has unanimously approved a measure that would suspend senators’ pay during any future government shutdowns, aligning themselves with federal workers who miss paychecks when the government closes.
The decision passed by unanimous consent, meaning no vote was needed. It follows the longest government shutdown on record, during which federal workers went unpaid for months while U.S. lawmakers continued to receive their salaries amid a slow-moving effort to reopen the government — drawing sharp public criticism.
Their pay for being Senators are the least of their incomes.
So, independently wealthy lawmakers have more leverage over the rest…great.
That was my first thought. I wonder if there’s a list somewhere that has all the senators wealth/income on it.
Hey, so do bribed ones
At first I thought this meant something, but every lawmaker can withstand a ridiculous pause in pay. If I was a millionaire like most of them I woudn’t bat an eye. Want to make this work? Make it so the pay is lost if they get to a paycheck during a shutdown. Permanently. These guys are so greedy they’d fight a bear for 15 bucks.
