ICE is using the modern equivalent of Stingrays to intercept LTE and 5g bandwidths, either to stop all mobile transmissions or to capture them.
This tech acts as the beacon part of an LTE tower and records responses. As they fly, responses become stronger or weaker, allowing rough triangulation.
They use this tech among others on big “sweeper” planes out of Comox for SAR when a plane goes down and it can’t immediately be located. It can detect nearly every kind of radio, even really weak transmissions.
That page only reflects NPSAR’s situation.
I volunteer for CASARA, which is funded by the federal gov, military and some provincial. However, the ground crews and drone unit have different funding models. RCMP and BC provincial fund ground SAR, and drone unit for us is funded same as CASARA. Drone units in other areas are funded differently.
