A grand jury refused to indict Dunn on a felony assault count, part of a pattern of pushback against the Justice Department’s prosecution of surge-related criminal cases. After the rare rebuke from the grand jury, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office charged Dunn instead with a misdemeanor.

That’s an interesting excerpt. I always thought the proper response to an identified whatabout is to simply say “I asked you first.” -That’s assuming the opposite party refused to respond to the initial premise, argument, or question. I imagine if they did respond to the initial premise, argument, or question then asking whatabout… is just a standard form of discussion and debate, or so I’d think.
That’s a good question, it makes me similarly think ‘What happens to the social contract when a nation & government no longer provide security to it’s own citizens?’

I’m not a great authority on relationships or marriage as I’ve mostly opted for single life but I have spent a lot of time around the various aspects of substance abuse and the way you describe this discussion sounds eerily similar to people with substance-use issues saying “everybody drinks” or “everybody uses drug x.” It might be true of the people they surround themselves with but it’s not representative of the broader population as a whole…
