I guess to be fair, most of my time working with electronics was alongside the USN so that makes sense

I know you’re not wrong but I’ve always heard that pin called “ground” instead of “earth” in English
Electric motors have high torque at low RPM
For anyone scrolling by and curious about this, this is caused by the combination of physical and electrical resistance. In a typical engine, RPM and torque go up together because it requires more force to get to those higher RPMs (IIRC this is called positive correlation). In a circuit, you have to kind of convince the electricity that it would be better off somewhere else (by connecting to a ground, this is due to electrical resistance), so you have to give it a heavy upfront load to get it going which causes a lot of torque due to the physical resistance
I don’t think anybody can dethrone Google Maps
I wonder how the whole “AI is more important than copyright” thing could play into this… Someone could totally program an “AI” map assistant right?
Yo, startpage looks sick. I’ll have to poke around and see if I can find more info on that it looks super useful. My quick test just now was “cloture 2025” which returned 4 news articles followed by basically nothing but .gov links, whereas Google returns way more “news”
Yeah I think I’m headed in this direction. I’ve also been thinking about one of them self-hostable search engines a lot
People are giving great answers here. One I didn’t notice at a glance is that the Fediverse is feckin small. Most of the world doesn’t know it exists yet, and centralized social medias are probably not gonna be super big about pushing that info through their algorithms
Not technically my first lease, but the first one that I’m financially responsible for which is pretty neat…
Ya know I was gonna say “all things considered” at first but I realized that it’s actually only neat if you consider only a small portion of things. If you consider all things, you would realize that paying rent in a post-scarcity world is laughable
I love this
The struggle is real
I know I show favoritism with people and pets, but I’ve been in so many situations in my life where I’ve had to consciously remove that behavior that nowadays it comes automatically for a lot of situations. When someone asks me who I’d prefer to do something with, my knee jerk reaction isn’t “who do I want to do this with more?” It’s “who did I do this with most recently?”
Also, favorites are just way too situational. My favorite color? On what? A hamburger? Pink. My clothes? Black. My computer? Mauve.
My favorite food? For which meal? How was my day? What have I eaten recently?
There are some easy favorites. My favorite hoodie is the one that my, now ex previously partner, brought to me while I was going through one of my lowest points in life. I’m grateful they let me keep it.
My favorite thing about life is learning. Perhaps that’s why I struggle to pick favorites. My favorite anything is one that I have not yet experienced, because I get to learn something when I do. I’m really trying to keep my love for learning against the odds. I know that it becomes more difficult as you get older, and I’ve definitely slipped into complacency with my knowledge for a few periods in my life. I also know that if I continue to fight for myself and others ability and access to knowledge, it will be easier to maintain my desire to learn. Otherwise I’d be a hypocrite for telling everyone to go pick up a book haha
Word
Same! I think that’s actually part of what influenced this behavior in me. I would miss texts, so I built the habit of going and checking/rereading them occasionally
What was your favorite comment that you made?
I’ve always been bad at picking favorites, I’m not sure if that’s a normal issue. But for this particular case, I have an extra struggle: option paralysis. I’ve made 516 comments on this account, how could I choose any one to be my favorite?
Is there one that makes you smile?
I have always found internet browsers to be clunky, so I mostly interact with social media through apps. As such I use Voyager for Lemmy, and PWAs for some of the services that I haven’t found an app for
I have a ring from a 3 month stint a few years back. It was supposed to be an engagement ring (I was dumb lol) but now I just wear it cause it’s a nice ring
Zenni works the same, and they ship to the EU it’s just a bit more expensive. Most of the time still worth paying the reduced price for the frames, not to mention (I haven’t done extensive research on this so I could be wrong, but from cursory glance) they seem to have a more ethical workflow
I like to tell every eyeglass wearer I meet about Zenni. Your insurance may or may not cover it, but you probably won’t care because they only charge about $20 per pair of glasses unless you need bonkers lenses.
RIP Baumiandcats
He’s still alive but stopped making my comfort content. I’ll probably get into his MTG stuff at some point but I’m still recovering from him stopping playing Dota. I watched him play Dota almost my whole life
I think deep seek have an uncensored model
They do, but the smaller ones and the distilled ones still struggle with some censorship. Methinks it has to do with more parameters = more ability to decide what is and isn’t disinformation, however I doubt they’re gonna self host the 18b model on 8b brand to get around that
You’re gonna look around and see a few old accounts and think you missed the early bus. You didn’t. We’re still pioneering.
If you think “why isn’t there a community for this” or “why isn’t anyone posting to this community” it’s because we’re small and we need people like you to fix those issues!
