Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has won the Democratic nomination for governor of Wisconsin, according to a race call by the Associated Press. He narrowly defeated state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist whose campaign had challenged the party establishment.
Crowley had at one point actually suspended his foundering campaign, facing low poll ratings and scarce campaign funds. But he relaunched it days later with the backing of outgoing Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in an effort to turn back the momentum by Hong.
The Hong loss comes after progressives saw a series of wins in recent primaries around the country. But the narrow margin of the loss still signals Democratic voters seeking change.
Disappointing but not too surprising. Hong had great positions and I liked her direct style, personally, but it was clear that “traditional” Dems would either want a more normie personality or a slicker package. With the stakes in November, voters are anxious. I don’t know know anything about Crowley, hopefully he’s decent enough to win
“Low poll ratings and scarce campaign funds” sounds like a great way to go into the general election. Sounds like Wisconsin dems prefer a republican governor over DSA.

I agree with you, but it’s not great that we’ve cultivated an electorate that doesn’t account for people growing or changing their past positions.
Ah well, Wisconsin will get the representative they vote for; let’s hope it works out for them.
