This guy is apparently the first black candidate who is a member of the DSA who is going to be elected to the state House (and yes, he is going to be elected: in the 58th district, the token Republican has absolutely zero chance). He is, however, far from the first leftist/socialist rep from that or other nearby districts.
The main news here is that DSA as an organization is becoming more popular, such that leftist candidates are willing to be affiliated with the label “democratic socialist” instead of calling themselves “progressive” or whatever.
