Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Sunday contrasted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s (D) policies with President Trump’s, responding to cries against socialism amid the recent wave of democratic socialist primary election victories.
“Trump cuts funding for childcare, Mamdani thinks that we should have free and universal childcare,” Sanders told online progressive commentator Jack Cocchiarella on MeidasTouch’s “On Sunday” show on YouTube. “Mamdani is trying to build low-income and affordable housing in New York City. Trump is cutting funding.”
Sanders added that Mamdani opposes, “as most of us do, the endless wars that are being fought right now through Trump, as well as the extremist Israeli government and their genocidal policies in Gaza,” whereas “Trump supports Netanyahu,” referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Who do you think is on the side of the American people on these issues?” Sanders said. “I think what we are talking about is where the American people want us to be.”
What a silly comparison the mayor of NYC has functionally no power to do a lot of the things Zohran wants to do because he is still beholden to the whims of their governor and Kathy Hochul does not really give a fuck on what Zohran wants.
I also think is continues to be rich how we describe Gaza as a Trump issue, obfuscating the long history of bipartisan support for genocide.
It seems he has the power to do quite a bit for the 8.5M residents of NYC in my opinion. I could write a list of positive things he has done to create meaningful and impactful change for individuals and small businesses alike. I’m sure with more power he would be championing and enacting similar policies, whereas there is no such argument that can be made for Trump who wields the entire government. Comparing them for what they are doing with what they have to get the job done is not so silly.
Which is perfect, right. He gets to say a lot of what he wants to do, but never has to do it. He gets credit for wanting to, without doing.
This guy has done more for the working class in NY than the rest of the democratic party combined.
This is less praise for Zohran and more condemnation of the Dems.
That’s just plain uninformed.
