For some reason we decided that felons can’t have guns or vote even after they’ve done their time, and we’ve decided that enslavement of convicts is perfectly legal.

Yeah, so would it really be so surprising if big business sent lobbyists to push the government to get drugs into the country so more people could be arrested and forced to do slave labor for said big business? The lobbying would only need to me cheaper than paying the laborers. Slashing labor costs would yield record profits, and this is not news to the psychopaths who run massive companies.
