The U.S. government officially shut down after Congress and the White House failed to reach an agreement on how to extend federal funding.
Donald Trump’s Republican Party controls both chambers of Congress, but it needs Democratic support to pass a bill in the Senate, where 60 votes are required. And the two parties failed to craft a bipartisan bill, with the Senate rejecting both a GOP proposal and a Democratic proposal just hours before the shutdown deadline.
It’s the first government shutdown since 2018, in Trump’s first term, which was the longest ever at 34 days, lasting into early 2019. There is no clear path to a resolution, with the two sides fundamentally at odds over how to resolve the impasse.
- Need to remind yall how important it is for you to call your Democrat representatives (if youre so fortunate) and give them your support, tell them to hold strong. The Rs are using every resource they have right now to make the public think this shutdown is the Dems fault
- The Republicans never had any intention of negotiating a goddamn thing. Following their chosen leader’s mentality ‘negotiation’ is a bad faith process where you intimidate or coerce your opponent into concessions until they have nothing to offer and no power to leverage, at which point you absorb or destroy them. All of their actions and rhetoric reinforce this interpretation, you can attempt to change my mind on this, but I’m just as certain you’ll expose your own biases and ignorance in the process, so by all means, try me.
- Damn republicans will do just about anything to stop the Epstein files from being released.
