That’s not how it works in the Senate; it’s all seniority. But the House? The Speaker doesn’t even have to be a member.
This must be so confusing to anyone who doesn’t keep up with US politics
I kind of agree with this but aren’t there bigger fish to fry before they start eating their own?
Fish they have both already vowed to leave raw.
Help a non-American out. What’s the beef with Jeffries?
Beyond what others have said, I’ve heard him interview and I don’t think he can think on his feet too well.
He seemed to have a library of scripted responses and select the closest, but still mismatched response and sounded like he was reading a script. When the interviewer interjected to attempt to clarify what she assumed was a misunderstood question because the response was off, he just rewound a few words in his speech and continued, saying verbatim the last few words again before the interjection on the way to finish the response (which did kind of have an answer in the responses closing section, but the rest of the answer was useless and off topic).
On one question where he didn’t seem to have a good enough prepared response and he clearly had to wing it, it was pretty bad.
He’s an AIPAC stooge who has quoted the racist George Wallace in support of Israel

Don’t get me wrong y’all, I love Bernie, but I think he’s just too old. We need to transition to the newer generation.
I thought “he looks like he’s about to die” 15 years ago. As far as I can tell, he hasn’t changed, so I can’t in good conscience look at Donald Trump and the McConnell meat puppet and tell Bernie he’s not good enough.
Age is age, I’d rather an authentic person over a younger actor
I agree on the authenticity part. I don’t think it should just be someone younger just because they are younger. They should also be progressive, authentic, and willing to put in the work. But I do think it’s important to engage younger voters as well. Also in terms of long term strategy and collaboration, how much of a set back could Bernie passing away do?
I slam that neither of them should be the leaders, and need a pair like Sanders and AOC, try that this time instead of these weaksauce guys.
I was fully ready to be a doomer about the dems being feckless before all the results came in, then thing folks are missing is that what just occurred happened in the face of a billionaire spending half a billion dollars trying to buy an election and it didn’t come close to working.
I’m not saying it’s all over but the shouting but that’s a dramatic shift and actually undercuts the power of massive campaign donations. Politicians will now have to consider that when both designing their campaigns and accepting donations.
What just happened proves that spending the most money doesn’t win elections anymore at least not like it once did. Missi-fucking-ssippi has a black democratic senator in the face of all the spending done by the wealthy and big business. That’s a paradigm shift
Bernie and AOC as their respective chamber leaders should be a non-negotiable
These guys are middle of the road feckless, milquetoasts. We need more dynamic voices.
Strangely, as of 4:08 Eastern time, the New York Times is asserting:
Representative Katherine M. Clark of Massachusetts, the No. 2 House Democrat, is set to become the majority leader in January, after her party won control of the chamber.
Ms. Clark, 63, a quiet, progressive power player in Congress, would make history as the first woman to hold that role…
“Set to become” with zero further substance on how that change came about, then backing away from that with indefinite “would” and not the definite “will.”
And for as grand as they make this woman sound – she’s a genuinely effective whip, for example, and has a trans daughter – she is clearly every bit as establishment Dem as Jeffries. “She’s left of Jeffries!” NYT keeps saying, and I’m over here thinking it would be hard to get a spark plug shim between them.
To be blunt, the whole article is coming across as desperate editorializing, wanting to sway readers with suggestion under the guise of informing with facts.
I no longer expect more from NYT after what I’ve seen with their Epstein coverage (great on facts, but desperate to negate any suggestion of his blackmail activities, for example) but jesus fucking christ, NYT, do better.
The billionaires are thrashing in their loss.
