I appreciate the points Doctorow makes, but I’m one of those people that feels trapped, voting against something instead of voting for something.
Make Carney feel the same. Bring him a fruit cake and the firmest handshake of his life.
Yeah, I’m in the same place, but my support for Carney has declined to something like 52% for, 48% against. Trapped for sure when considering the alternative(s).
I felt the same way, but looking at the policies being enacted I find myself asking: what did I vote against that isnt happening now?
Buddy buddiness with Trump and MAGA The only reason why Pierre Poilievre’s is doing his pretend to stick up for Canada act is because they failed to keep the momentum they had through the winter before the election.
He would have cheered on the whole ICE thing (securing borders blah blah blah), actively antagonized anti-Trump protest, and shown support or played PR for everything we think abhorrent that the Trump administration has done over the last 18 months. And if you allow me to speculate for a minute, PP could have paved the way for ICE’s involvement or joint operations with certain police departments in Canada.
I don’t think we’ve really had a substantial difference in our current administration aside from the rhetoric of resistance. Canada has significantly increased deportations since Carney came to power and has been increasingly operating in an ICE-like fashion.
The OP details how on tech stuff, Carney seems very comfortable with kowtowing to American companies and the demands of the US government. In tiher aspects of trade, have we seen Carney make any gains with Trump in power that can be reasonably attributed to Carney?
So far, to me, “elbows up” seems restricted to building pipelines in Canada and making military deals with other countries. Is that really a substantial difference with how Poillievre would have operated?
I think it’s a valid argument to make, that rhetorically Carney is progressive but his government’s legislative actions are more conservative like Harper or Chrétien. But Poilievre is not like either of those two I compared Carney to.
If I were to name one concrete difference between how the two would govern that is based on public actions/statements and not speculation, Carney is keeping the Toronto-Quebec High Speed Rail project going through its design until its groundbreaking, where Poilievre would have cancelled it with no legitimate alternative.
Mr Doctorow may need to learn about Harm Reduction.
